The article, “Testosterone Decreases after Ingestion of Sugar (Glucose),” explains the effect of sugar on a man’s testosterone levels. The study co-author Frances Hayes, MD, an endocrinologist at St. Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, who did the research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston said that there is an increase in testosterone prescriptions because of the decrease in men’s testosterone levels. She hypothesized that this problem is caused by the consumption of more and more food, especially sugar. A study was done to observe the effects of glucose on testosterone levels of 74 men. The results showed that the glucose consumption caused the men in the study to have decreased levels of testosterone by 25%. Hayes concluded that “Men with low testosterone should have their hormone levels retested after they fast overnight because eating may transiently lower testosterone levels.”

Testosterone is a male hormone that is responsible for men’s sexual characteristics. Testosterone is made up of 17-beta-hydroxy-4-androstene-3-one. The reasoning behind its potency is that it is a highly effective androgen. Androgens are not only effective, but are also a natural and liable way to develop male sexual characteristics. These characteristics include facial hair and a deep voice as well as strong muscles and bone mass. When one takes testosterone these characteristics become dominant. For example, rapid growth of facial hair, deepening of the voice, an increase in muscle tone and intensification of bone mass and structure are all effects of testosterone use. Also, testosterone is responsible for normal growth and development of male sex organs and maintenance of secondary sex characteristics.

Testosterone has been known to encourage men’s health. A proper amount of testosterone reduces high blood pressure and risk of a heart attack. This hormone has been prescribes to treat the following medical conditions: Hypogonadism (low gonadal function) in the male, and Cryptorchism (absence of the testis into the scrotum).

50 million men in the United States have low testosterone levels with or without knowing it. This is expected since a man’s testosterone level declines by about 1% each year after the age of 40. Low testosterone may cause hair loss, obesity, loss of libido, low energy and sterility. Tests and screenings are vital to receiving testosterone replacement therapy. When the serum testosterone level is low and LH is elevated, testosterone replacement therapy is warranted. Patients with low serum LH and testosterone levels need an imaging study of their pituitary and may need endocrinologic consultation.

Low testosterone levels are linked to the metabolic syndrome which is the grouping of metabolic risk factors that amplify the chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes as well as other health problems, including loss of bone and muscle mass, depression, and decreased libido. Testosterone treatment also increases good cholesterol levels. This hormone is also known to prevent men from depression, stress, anxiety and all those conditions making a person feel despair and dejected. Testosterone also plays a large role in intellectual ability. Some studies have shown that using testosterone therapy increases the hormone in older participants to levels adequate to those belonging to people of youth. In short, testosterone replacement therapy is proven to improve memory. Testosterone therapy has not been effective in curing Alzheimer’s; however, it has been demonstrated to prevention of the disease.

In a nut shell, testosterone replacement therapy has been proven to do the following for men:

-Rapid growth of facial hair

-Development of a deeper voice

-Increase in muscle tone

-Increase in bone mass

-Reduces high blood pressure

-Reduces risk of heart attack

-Reduces risk of a stroke

-Reduces risk of type 2 diabetes

-Treats numerous medical conditions related to male sex organs

-Decrease in cholesterol count

-Increase in energy levels and decrease in stress levels

-Decrease in memory loss
